Health Canada advises men who take the drugs such as Viagra, Levitra and Cialis to consult their doctors and look for urgent medical help if they have sudden problems with vision such as vision loss or blurred vision or any other while they are taking these medicines. Viagra, Levitra and Cialis are medications that used to treat erectile dysfunction and impotence in men.
In 2005 the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology published an article where fourteen cases of non arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) happened in patients who used Viagra were discussed. These men had some other NAION risk factors, including high levels of cholesterol, hypertension or diabetes. Health Canada is now reviewing 2 Canadian reports concerning vision problems in men who use Viagra that can be connected with NAION, although it hasn’t been confirmed yet that these issues are linked to the usage of the medicines above. It’s difficult to conclude if the usage of Viagra, Levitra or Cialis is resulting in NAION, as men who experience erectile problems frequently have hypertension, diabetes or other diseases putting these men at increased risk.
Health Canada is monitoring these medicines and has asked all 3 manufacturers: Pfizer (Viagra), Bayer (Levitra) and Eli Lilly (Cialis) for extra safety information. The product information changes for health care specialists and patients are expected. The information will be available for the public when all the safety facts have been carefully evaluated.
Whilst Health Canada continues to assess the safety data, the Department is advising people to address any concerns now.
