Sept. 30, 2004 Merck & Co., Inc. today announced a voluntary worldwide withdrawal of VIOXX (rofecoxib), its arthritis and acute pain medication. The companys decision, which is effective immediately, is based on new, 3-year data from a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial, the Adenomatous Polyp Prevention on VIOXX trial (APPROVe).

The trial, which is being stopped, was designed to evaluate the efficacy of VIOXX 25 mg in preventing recurrence of colorectal polyps in patients with a history of colorectal adenomas. (Read ‘Vioxx to monitor.’…)

Celebrex Study halted because of more than twice as many heart attacks as placebo

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration released a study in November 2004 that said VIOXX may have contributed to an additional 27,785 heart attacks or deaths from 1999 to 2003.
